ATAQUE DE TIBURON EN BALI

Hace unos meses se reportó el sorprendente ataque de un pequeño tiburón a un surfista en la playa de Balian en Bali.

Al parecer los días anteriores a este ataque, fueron intensos días de lluvia que hizo que el río que desemboca en la playa de Balian bajara con muchos sedimentos. Esto genera un imán de alimentos para los pequeños tiburones de arrecife que hay en la zona. El tiburón, confundido entre un mar turbio, mordió y "saboreó" la piel humana soltándolo enseguida aunque los daños fueron impresionantes.

En lineas generales, los tiburones de arrecife nunca atacan a humanos; entre otras cosas porque tienen miedo a animales que les superen en tamaño. Los tiburones de arrecife que se pueden encontrar en Bali son tiburones pequeños de no más de 1,5m de envergadura (como mucho); de manera que jamás atacan. Son embargo, debido a las pésimas condiciones de visibilidad en el agua, el tiburón no supo distinguir y cuando se dio cuenta, le soltó.

El surfista fue atendido de urgencia en un hospital de Bali donde se recupera favorablemente. Los testigos que presenciaron el ataque, volvieron al día siguiente para seguir disfrutando de buenas sesiones de surf (aunque ya con el agua más limpia).

Only a few months ago there was a report of a surfer being bitten by a shark in Balian, and today we received a similar report from our friend Michael Trott from Istana Balian.

With the recent rains producing a lot of river run-off, the water has been murky around Balian. This morning the river water surged out to meet a dropping tide creating the usual brown water we are all too familiar with in the wet season here in Balian. An eyewitness, also a surfer, reported he had the usual feeling of slight unease while surfing unclear water, when a fellow surfer was bitten in the forearm by a seemingly small shark.

The creature was clearly trawling the river run-off for a snack, according to the surfers who were there, and they are confident it was a case of mistaken identity and not a reason to stop surfing the well-known spot. The victim was taken to hospital here in Bali and is expected to make a full recovery. We wish him well and hope he's back out in the water with us soon.

The boys who were out with him this morning were back in the water in Balian this afternoon enjoying the idyllic spot and clearly not fazed by this incident.
